Air is forced through the heater continuously at floor level, rising through natural convection, and the power consumption of the heater decreases as the air approaches the desired warmth. Lasko ceramic heaters include a lower power setting, 700 Watts. That’s practical for spot heating in a smaller location. A third setting runs the fan without heating.

Fireplaces from Aurora
Aurora marble fireplaces have developed the ‘Napier’ insert with this adjustable canopy feature. Additional inserts, also featuring an adjustable canopy, will shortly be introduced.Original Arched Fireplaces had no canopy. However, almost all modern arch inserts do.

Many modern houses contain small openings for fireplaces. They are too small to support an original insert. So in 1984 fireplace manufacturers developed the 3” return. It had a serious advantage. The advantage of the 3” return is that the fireplace may be fitted to a flat wall and there’s no intrusion of the insert beyond the wall.

Adv. They can supply an endless supply of hot water, and can save you energy because they do not have standby losses like storage type water heaters.

But they are limited in the amount of hot water that can be produced at one time. They are more expensive to purchase and install than a conventional storage type water heater. Electric units heat the water as it passes over an electrical element. To run an electric tankless water heater, you will need to have it hardwired to your circuit breaker/electrical panel. Although, electric tankless water heaters are less expensive to purchase and operate, they typically have less capacity. This makes them less practical for large families or households that consume large amounts of hot water at one time.

There are many different reasons to purchase one of the heaters of the brand Noritz. The biggest components to a tankless water heater are the burner and heat exchange, the heart of the system. Instead of using just one flame burner, Noritz tankless heaters utilizes two burners instead, not only heating the water running through the system faster, but the second row also captures and burns and left over gases that have escaped from the first, reducing emissions, stabilizing water heat variations, and boosting flow rate.

A typical servamatic solar hot water system has a couple of parts. It must have a collector where cold water gets collected. Then it goes through a series of absorbent pipes and heat chambers where the water gets directly heated using sun rays.

Adv. In addition, these new wood stoves could easily be used for cooling. Fisher wood stoves were made from heavy steel plates ¼’ and 5/16′ thick. The doors were made of cast-iron. Bob Fisher gave the original names for the models of stoves. They were “Papa Bear,” “Momma Bear” and “Baby Bear.” Nowadays the stoves designed by Bob Fisher are manufactured no more. However, they are still sold as vintage goods and have become collectors’ items.

In the mid-1980s the old wood stoves were replaced by clean burning stoves. Fisher wood stoves released about 50 – 80 grams of smoke for every kilogram of wood that was burned. By closing steel chimney off and limiting release to only a small hole, 6 inches in diameter, the heat would be retained in the room. It’s very important to underline that the new clean burning Fisher stove released less than 6 grams of smoke on every 1 kilogram of wood that was burned. These new clean burning stoves are known as EPA outdoor wood stoves.

As for the design, the design of the Fisher stove was based on observing how heat was lost from a wood burning fireplace. The Fisher wood stoves had a plume-pipe that extended from the top of the steel box structure and released the smoke outside. Older models had steel doors. Newer models had heat resistant glass doors to show the fire within.

Adv. Cost effective and convenient system of heating is a great option for those who want to stop losing money.
In spite of the simplicity of such kind of heating, there are certain peculiarities requiring attention: size, air conditioning, amount of wood put in it and so on.
Outdoor wood furnaces vs. indoor ones

The Wood furnace is a water coated stove that operates according to the following scheme: the water that covers the stove is heated and pumped through pipes to the building to heat it. Heating is, however, not the only function of the wood furnace. The wood furnace provides hot water in sufficient amount to satisfy needs of a whole house.

Reasonable use of wood furnaces brings many advantages to their owners. One of the main advantages is economy of money. The quality heating is a result of efficiency of the wood furnace. Duct as well as Evaporating coil works clearance from combustibles due to high temperature in the supply plenum. Check manufacturer’s recommendation to become more aware of this thing.
To prevent air conditioning gas or oil burner working in combination with wood furnace will be twice as instrumental.

Adv. With a fresh cloth wipe off any excess oil and then buff the stone.

For marble mantels and facings follow the directions for marble floors and marble furniture.

For painted mantels follow the cleaning directions given for painted walls and woodwork.

Brass andirons and fire tools are not difficult to keep bright if they are polished regularly. Use a polish made for brass (metal polishes differ in their abrasive qualities) and rub until the tarnish is gone. Polish the brass with a piece of soft flannel or chamois leather.

Burned-in resins from wood can be removed with steel wool but fine emery cloth, which can be bought at a hardware store, is better and easier to handle. Rub in one direction and use your polish afterwards.

Lacquered brass needs only to be dusted or washed with tepid suds. If the lacquer begins to crack and peel, or has become blackened from the fire, the tools should be redone. To do them yourself, first remove the old lacquer with acetone (drugstore), then polish them.

Wipe them again with acetone to be sure that every trace of the polish is removed, then brush or spray them with a transparent metal lacquer.

Clean iron fire tools with a brush or duster and rub them occasionally with a cloth moistened with kerosene. This will keep them black and prevents rust. Or they can be painted with a special, fire-resistant andiron paint, available in dull or glossy finish.

If the horizontal bar of an andiron snaps, a welder will repair it for you at little cost, or put on a new piece.

Fire screens should be dusted frequently. If they become gummy or soiled, clean them with kerosene on a cloth, or scrub them with hot water and a good detergent.

FIRE PREVENTION
So much for your fireplace, excbept for a final note of caution. Never retire at night, or leave your home untended, while a fire still blazes on the hearth. If you can't wait for it to burn out bank it thickly with ashes. Fire screens are a must for untended fires. They should always be in place if there are small children about.

For fireplace which has slate hearth, using the mild soap or detergent to wash them. You can polish the brass andirons and fire tools to keep them bright. Clean iron fire tools with brush or duster and rub occasionally with kerosene.
Article Source: http://www.articlewheel.com

Adv. The fires then were built on the ground. While the ancient people were inside their huts, smoke accidentally escaped through holes in the roof. Approximately half a million years ago, fires were already built on a solid hearth and holes were deliberately made in the roof so smoke could exit.

Fires were traditionally placed in the middle of the room to allow maximum accessibility and heat output. The advancement of the first two-storey buildings led to the fireplace being relegated to the outside wall. The only material available then for building the floor of the second storey was wood. Obviously, it was unwise to build a fire on a wooden floor, so the fireplace was moved into a cut-out in the wall. The flue was placed horizontally so extraction of smoke was poor. Smoke would frequently have blown into the room. In the end, they discovered the principle of the chimney.

The means of using wood to heat homes and offices is almost as old as dirt. It can be traced back to the 1700s when Abraham Darby used procedures of smelting, where it was found out that iron provided a cost-efficient way of producing heat.

It was during the Victorian age when fireplaces began to grow popular. During this time, people discovered that aside from producing heat, fireplaces added a hint of elegance. It somehow gave homes a comfortable and traditional environment. Through the years, housing designs evolved and so did the fireplaces, along with the technology. Fireplaces changed and became more fashionable, offering sand casting systems. This provided a chance for makers to create even more superior designs.

In spite of all the changes and the advancement, the basic fireplace is still made up of two components – the surround and the insert. The surround part of the fireplace is composed of the mantle and sides. It is typically made of wood, granite, marble, and sometimes iron. The insert is the part of the fireplace where the fire is burned. This part is constructed using cast iron and is frequently adorned with stylish tiles of different colors and designs.

Still, with all his excellent discoveries, Franklin's effort had a defect. The hitch was that air cannot be drawn in. This is because the smoke was vented from the bottom. David Rittenhouse, from Philadelphia, decided to utilize Benjamin's invention but innovated it by putting in an L-shaped stovepipe as a means of moving the air through the fire and then emitting the smoke out through a chimney. This add-on proved quite successful. It was in the late 1700s that these freestanding stoves were being used all over the country. Although David Rittenhouse made the stove a success, people still identified it by the name Franklin Stove.

Adv. Anyone who regularly fires up their stove or fireplace knows there is much more to it than meets the eye.
I’m not the world’s best tennis player.. I can’t ski over those big bumps (moguls) and I’ve never run a marathon—but I do consider myself one of the world’s foremost experts on starting a fire. I was always a pyromaniac...loved those model rockets, fireworks and anything else that would blow up. I never thought any good would come out of my fascination with fire. Thus,

1. Make certain the chimney is drafting upwards. Many chimneys will reverse (cold air falls) when not in use. Open the damper of your fireplace and/or the door of your stove..if you feel a cold draft coming down then your chimney has reversed itself. Keep this in mind and follow step #4 below in order to reverse your chimney.

2. Set the Kindling. Yes, everyone does this differently. Here’s the best way. Place firestarters, fatwood or crumpled newspaper (3 or 4 sheets balled up fairly tightly) on the floor or grate of your stove. Place small kindling over the paper or starter...TIP --the more dry, small kindling you have--the easier and better your fire will start. Crisscross the kindling so there is plenty of air space in between each piece. Wood that is packed too tight will not burn properly.

3. Set more Wood. Set larger wood on top of the kindling, and continue to set larger and larger pieces on top until the stove is over 2/3 full. If it’s an open fireplace, set one or two layers of crisscrossed or spaced wood on top of the kindling.

4. Countdown - If you determined in step #1 that your chimney was drafting upwards, go ahead an light the newspaper or starter. If you think your chimney has reversed, do the following: If it’s an open fireplace, place a piece of balled up newspaper up through the damper..it should stay in place by itself. Light this piece of paper, and watch it --it should warm up the chimney and get sucked upwards.

5. Ignition - Assuming that you’ve lit the starter, stand back for a moment and watch the fire do it’s thing. If you have a stove, keep the draft control and damper fully open at first, in fact it may help to keep the stove door slightly open for the first few moments until the fire is caught.

Gardening Design

6. Blastoff - The fire should quickly catch and spread through your load of wood. Don’t make the mistake of closing your air control or damper soon after you start the fire. it may look good, but until you’ve warmed the stove up, warmed the chimney and established a good bed of coals (red embers), your fire is not really at critical mass.

7. Mission Accomplished - Keep the fire going..the subject of tending a fire in stoves and fireplaces will be addressed later in other documents, but keep these simple points in mind.
A. Always keep a “flame” on your fire - a smoking or smoldering fire is a cold and inefficient fire..and also produces pollutants and creosote (tar in the chimney)
B. Add more wood before the fire gets too low...this will assure the continuation of your hard-earned fire.
C. Use Dry, Seasoned wood - if your wood sizzles and refuses to light or burn it’s probably not ready for prime time --- store your wood in a dry place and cut and split it at least 8 months prior to burning.

http://www.hearth.com/

See more about Grills, Furniture and More!

Adv. Some people use them for added warmth (a secondary source of heat) on very cold days. Others burn wood in their fireplaces to create a cozy ambiance in the evening or on the weekend.

Conventional masonry and factory-built fireplaces are not efficient at producing heat. These fireplaces are also the source of smoke, indoors and out. To reduce the health risks of smoke—for you, your family, and your neighbors, EPA recommends installing an EPA certified fireplace insert, a vented gas stove, or a pellet stove.

EPA certified fireplace inserts give you the same efficient performance as EPA certified woodstoves. A certified insert is similar to a freestanding woodstove, but it has been modified by the manufacturer to fit a fireplace opening A certified installer will make sure to add a flue liner in your masonry chimney. Lining the chimney helps maintain a proper draft and prevents icing, which can block the flow of air through the system.

If your fireplace is factory built (or "zero-clearance"), you must use an insert that was specifically designed and tested for your unit to make it more efficient and less polluting. You can ascertain the brand and model of your fireplace by checking the label, which is generally on the sidewall of the firebox. A certified chimney sweep or retailer of hearth products can help you do this.

Clean Your Chimney

EPA recommends that you have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned each year to remove the creosote and keep it in good working order. The Chimney Safety Institute of America provides a list of certified Chimney Sweeps, searchable by state. In addition, Chimneys.com provides useful tips for fireplace operation and maintenance.

Cleaner Alternatives

Many open fireplaces are decorative in nature, designed more for aesthetics than efficiency. These days, fireplaces can burn natural gas (gas logs) or even propane. Some of the new electric models offer amazing realism. Gas models are available t hat have the same efficiency rating as central furnaces. These gas models have a broad range of heating capacities; some even offer ducting and heat circulation systems that make it possible to heat a substantial portion of your house.

http://www.epa.gov/woodstoves/fireplaces.html

Adv. Introduction

qIf you enjoy using your masonry fireplace but don't like the associated energy costs, you might want to consider purchasing a fireplace insert. An insert is basically a wood stove designed to fit into a conventional open fireplace.

Gas inserts consist of a gas log set installed into a steel or cast iron heat exchanger and are usually sealed on the front with glass. Many of these units have fans to move the heat, and are also available with remote controls, wall switches or wall-mounted thermostats.

Fireplace inserts are heavy, often weighing more than 400 pounds. Since wood-burning inserts need to be removed when the chimney is being cleaned and maintained, they can be awkward and heavy to handle. It is a job best left to a professional chimney sweep.

In some cases, however, you do not have to remove the insert to clean the chimney. The insert can stay in place during cleaning if you install a full relining collar, a stainless steel pipe that connects to the insert and goes to the top of the chimney.

You might need to purchase accessories such as a blower, glass door, or catalytic combustor to go with the insert.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wood-burning-fireplace.blogspot.com/2006/09/fire-place-inserts-introduction.html' title='Fire place inserts. Because heat can be lost with the smoke, a fireplace insert is often installed to increase heat retention. A freestanding wood stove, pellet stove, and gas stove also decorates and warms a home and requires some of the same maintenance and repair as a fireplace. (The terms "stove" and "fireplace" typically are used interchangeably.)

All fireplaces have the same two requirements: regulated air to feed the fire and a means of expelling smoke and fumes. A shuttered damper in the chimney provides an exit for smoke as well as creates an updraft that draws fresh air to the fire. Many new fireplace designs also use outside air intake vents under the fireplace so as not to draw warm air from the room. Gas fireplaces often have an inlet/outlet vent that expels fumes through a duct in an outside wall while drawing in fresh air.

Pellet stoves burn pellets made from sawdust and mill shavings; the pellets are loaded into a hopper at the top or front of the stove and delivered to the combustion chamber at a controlled rate by a motorized auger. Combustion air, blown into the chamber, develops superheated air. Room air is drawn across the heat exchanger by a fan, heated, and then returned to the room. Residual combustion gasses are vented outside, normally through a 3-inch flue that exits out the unit's back or top.

Sweep a chimney:

Remove all loose items from the fire surround and the hearth.
Cover the fireplace opening with a heavy fabric cover and seal it with duct tape. Also cover nearby flooring and furniture with a dropcloth.
From atop the roof, push a chimney brush from the chimney top down toward the fireplace below, moving the brush up and down to loosen debris.
Continue pushing the brush down the chimney by adding extension canes and moving the brush to loosen debris.
When the brush reaches the bottom of the chimney, withdraw the brush.
Allow the dust to settle for at least one hour before removing the cover over the fireplace opening.
Use a shop vacuum cleaner to remove debris from the fireplace floor and the smoke shelf.

You can find more useful information on http://www.bobvila.com/

Adv. The mantel makes the fireplace a focal point and sets the style for a room. If you have recently installed a zero-clearance fireplace or want to change the style of an existing masonry fireplace, you have two options: using a mantel kit or building one yourself. A mantel kit usually comes partially assembled with a surround that you can cut to suit the dimensions of your fireplace. If you have the skills and tools, you can design and build a mantel from premium boards and either stock or custom-milled moldings. Here are the basics for building a fireplace mantel using either of these two options.
Before you buy or design a fireplace mantel, check with your local building department for important fire-safety guidelines specifying required side and top clearance between a fireplace opening and any combustible materials.

1. Plan the Mantel: Take accurate measurements and make a sketch of the fireplace. Drill pilot holes, as shown, to determine what solid backing (if any) is behind the wall where the mantel will be installed. Choose a suitable size and style mantel, or design your own mantel making scaled working drawings (elevations and section views).

Tip: Buy samples of available moldings so you know what you have to work with. Cut and assemble short, cross-section models of the sides, frieze board, and mantel shelf with a hot-melt glue gun to help you visualize the design and determine nailing and fastening requirements.

2. Install Noncombustible Surround: Masonry fireplaces will already have brick or stone around the immediate firebox opening. To give a zero-clearance fireplace a more traditional look, you may want to install tile, veneer stone or brick, or another noncombustible surround material around the immediate firebox opening. Most of these materials are simply adhered to the wall with the appropriate adhesive and the joints are grouted. Cutting is usually done with a wet saw, which is a safe, easy-to-use rental tool.
3. Mill Custom Moldings: If you have a well-equipped workshop with a table saw, a router, and power sanders, you can mill moldings to imitate or duplicate ones that you've seen in a book or magazine. Here, a router with a guide and a half-round bit are used to make the fluted sides of a mantel. Use only the best woods and very sharp blades and bits. Progressively sand your molding with papers from 80- to 400-grit that are wrapped over foam blocks that have be cut to duplicate the molding's profile.

4. Attach the Wood Surround: Attach the wood surround to the wall using construction adhesive and the appropriate fasteners. If possible, locate fasteners where they will be covered by subsequent moldings. Countersink and later fill all holes that are not covered.

5. Build Up Molding: Take precise measurements and don't forget: "Measure twice and cut once." A professional-quality miter box or, preferably, a 10-inch power miter saw are required for the precision miters and crosscuts. Both are available at tool rental outlets.

Tip: Glue all joints but be sure to wipe off all excess glue with a damp cloth, especially if you plan to stain the wood. Glue will prevent proper staining.

6. Apply Finish: After a final sanding, meticulously clean the surface with a tack cloth. Mask the wall and other adjoining surfaces that are not being finished. Brush or wipe on stain, smooth the surface with 0000-grade steel wool, and apply at least three coats of polyurethane or another clear protective coating. If you prefer a painted finish, apply a paint primer, lightly sand with very fine sandpaper, and apply two or more coats of trim enamel.
Materials List

Mantel kit, or boards and moldings
Hot-melt glue gun
Router, table saw, power sanders
Safety glasses

Noncombustible Surround:

Tile, stone, or other surround material
Suitable cutting and installation tools
Adhesive, mortar, grout, or other installation materials

Mantel Installation:

Tape measure
Combination and framing squares
Miter box or 10-inch power miter saw
Finishing nails and other fasteners
Hammer and nail sets
Drill/driver, bits, drills, countersinks, and other accessories
Sandpaper (80-, 120-, 220-, and 400-grit)
Rubber sanding block
Caulk, glue, and construction adhesive

You can find all necessary information on this topic on http://www.doityourself.com/

Adv. Only a small percentage finds its way into the room. The warm air leaving the room is replaced by cold air from other areas of the house.
In fact, a wood-burning fireplace can exhaust as much as 24,000 cubic feet of air to the outside in just a few hours!
That means if your primary heating system is running while the fireplace is going, you're consuming energy to heat air that's being drawn into the fireplace and right up the chimney.

Fireplace efficiency
If you can't bear to give up your wood-burning fireplace, follow these tips to reduce your energy loss:
Keep the damper closed whenever the fireplace isn't in use. Leaving a damper open is the equivalent of keeping a two-foot-square window wide open.

Check the seal on the damper by closing it off and holding a tissue inside the firebox. If drafts blow the tissue around, repair or replace the damper.

When using the fireplace, turn your thermostat down to 55 degrees, close doors leading into the room, and crack open a window to allow fresh air to circulate.

Tight-fitting glass doors can prevent air from escaping out the chimney; they also improve the combustion efficiency while the fire is going.

Add caulking around the fireplace hearth

Adv. Any smoke that escapes from your wood stove unburned is wasted fuel that will stick in your chimney as creosote or be released as air pollution. An old or poorly installed wood stove can result in higher maintenance costs, greater risk of smoke in your home, and more environmental pollution. It could cause a house fire.
Properly installed EPA certified wood stove and fireplace inserts offer many benefits. They burn wood efficiently, more safely, and heat your home effectively with much less smoke. With EPA certified wood stoves and fireplace inserts, you should see only a thin wisp of steam coming from your chimney.

Installation Affects Efficiency
EPA recommends that your certified wood stove or fireplace insert be professionally installed by a certified technician to insure its safety and proper performance. The safety of your home and family depends on fully understanding and carrying out the critical manufacturer and building code requirements that include:

Proper clearances between the stove and venting system and combustible materials.
Proper protection of combustible floors.
Proper assembly of appliance and venting components.

Errors in installation (by a non-professional) may not be visible, and problems may not be apparent for a considerable length of time—and then only by a resulting home fire.
Furthermore, experienced professionals can properly size and place equipment for best heat distribution. The venting system (or chimney), in particular, is a critical area that requires professional involvement. This is the “engine” that drives the whole burning process—or causes it to perform poorly or fail. Professional decisions about the venting system to ensure adequate draft include:

Proper sizing (particularly avoiding oversized flues).
Proper height (often taller than minimum code requirements).
Proper location (interior of the house when possible) or protection from extreme cold.
Proper configuration (avoiding excessive horizontal runs and system turns in direction).

An EPA certified wood burning stove that is sized and placed properly with a venting system that delivers adequate draft will reduce wood consumption, produce more usable heat, and reduce maintenance from inefficient fires. To learn more about chimneys and venting systems, visit The Wood Heat Organization.
One of the best ways to find competent installation professionals is to check their credentials. A source for hearth system planners and installers is the National Fireplace Institute® (NFI). NFI is a non-profit certification agency that conducts nationwide education and testing of hearth professionals. To learn more about NFI and to locate an NFI Wood Burning Specialist, visit The National Fireplace Institute.

Practical Tips for Building a Fire.
Once your certified stove is properly installed, building an effective fire requires good firewood (using the right wood in the right amount) and good fire building practices. The following practical steps will help you obtain the best efficiency from your wood stove.
Season wood outdoors through the hot, dry summer for at least 6 months before burning it. Properly seasoned wood is darker, has cracks in the end grain, and sounds hollow when smacked against another piece of wood.
Store wood outdoors, stacked neatly off the ground with the top covered.
Burn only dry, well-seasoned wood that has been split properly.
Start fires with clean newspaper and dry kindling.
Burn hot, bright fires.
Let the fire burn down to coals, then rake the coals toward the air inlet (and wood stove door), creating a mound. Do not spread the coals flat.
Reload your wood stove by adding at least three pieces of wood each time, on and behind the mound of hot coals. Avoid adding one log at a time.
Use smaller fires in milder weather.
Regularly remove ashes from the wood stove into a metal container with a cover and store outdoors.
Money Saving TipsLook into getting your name on a list with local tree cutters who will drop wood at your home. This saves them from traveling to the landfill and paying dumping fees. It also reduces landfill dumping. Plus, you’ll end up with some free firewood.
You can reduce overall heating needs and heating bills by improving the insulation in your home; caulking around windows, doors, and pipes to seal air gaps; and adding weather-stripping to doors and windows. EPA's ENERGY STAR Home Improvement provides information on home sealing.

Using Your Wood Stove Safely
You should never smell smoke in your home; smoke is unhealthy to breathe. The odor of smoke in your home indicates that your wood stove is not operating efficiently or safely. An EPA certified wood stove burns wood efficiently, releasing 60 to 80% less smoke up the chimney.
Safety Begins at InstallationUsing a wood stove safely starts with proper installation. EPA recommends using a certified professional installer as the best way to ensure correct, safe installation. A properly installed wood stove always has a vent to the exterior.
Because an EPA certified wood stove burns more efficiently than older non-certified models, much less creosote builds up in the chimney. Creosote is a combustible residue formed by wood gases that are not completely burned. Too much creosote can lead to a chimney fire. In 1998, there were 18,300 residential fires in the United States originating in chimneys, fireplaces, and solid fuel appliances, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. These fires resulted in 160 personal injuries, 40 deaths, and $158 million in property damage.
Safety Includes Yearly MaintenanceEPA and fire officials recommend having your wood stove, chimney, and vents professionally inspected and cleaned each year to keep them in safe working order. The Chimney Safety Institute of America provides a list of certified chimney sweeps, searchable by state. In addition, Chimneys.com provides useful tips for wood stove operation and maintenance
Safe Wood Burning PracticesOnce your EPA certified wood stove is properly installed, follow these guidelines for safe operation:
Keep all flammable household items—drapes, furniture, newspapers, and books—far away from your wood stove.
Start fires only with clean newspaper and dry kindling. Never start a fire with gasoline, kerosene, charcoal starter, or a propane torch.
Do not burn wet or green (unseasoned) logs.
Do not use logs made from wax and sawdust in your wood stove or fireplace insert – they are made for open hearth fireplaces. If you use manufactured logs, choose those made from 100 percent compressed sawdust.
Build small, hot fires. A smoldering fire is not a safe or efficient fire.
Keep the doors of your wood stove closed unless loading or stoking the live fire.
Regularly remove ashes from your wood stove into a metal container with a cover. Store the container of ashes outdoors on a cement or brick slab (not on a wood deck or near wood).
Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Adv.
